Joyeuse's began as a small family kitchen on South 23rd Street, where the first recipe book was opened and the first loaves were pulled from a cast-iron oven. What started as a modest bakery has grown — not in ambition, but in reputation — into one of Philadelphia's most quietly beloved gathering places.
We bake with the same hands, the same patience, and the same conviction that food should taste of something real. Our sourdough ferments for forty-eight hours. Our butter is French. Our coffee is roasted locally, within a few miles of here. Nothing about this place was designed; it was simply done well, year after year.

48-Hour Sourdough
Our starter has been fed every day since 1987. The bread takes two full days — no rushing it, no shortcuts.
Pre-Dawn Baking
Our bakers arrive before 4 a.m. so the first loaves hit the counter while the neighborhood is still waking up.

We let the farmers tell us what to cook. Spring asparagus, fall squash, winter root vegetables — the menu follows the earth.
